Hi, I’m Dr. Sheridan here at Barley Wellness. And I’m going to talk to you about the intervertebral disc a little bit today, and how to keep it healthy, and what to do if something happens to it.

Healthy Spine Starts with Your Discs

So the disc is like a cushion between the vertebra. And it’s got a hard, fibrous, outside and a jelly like substance on the inside. So people always hear about disc herniations. And this is would be an example here, where it bulges out and touches a nerve. And that’s when people notice that they they’re having significant symptoms. So we’re going to try and explain how we can try and keep that from happening. So when things look good, the disc height is making up about half the distance of the window where the nerve comes out. And as that if that degenerates, it’ll start to flatten out and shut that window where that nerve comes out. We don’t want that to happen. That’s more of a degenerative problem. The the desk itself runs into trouble when the vertebra don’t move so well. The disc gets nutrition from proper movement, it doesn’t get a lot of blood supplies. So when you move fluids and moved, like like a tidal flow in with the good with the bad, and that keeps the disc healthy. When there’s a subluxation or misalignment of the vertebrae causing pressure on the on the nerve and distorting the disc is when that disc runs into trouble. So what we want to try and do is keep the intervertebral disc happy by making sure that the spine moves properly. And that’s what chiropractic does. So it’s the best preventative way to keep your discs from degenerating.
